Mold in Your Cold Cellar? What It Means and What to Do
Cold Cellar Pro · Updated July 2026
Finding mould in your cold cellar is unsettling — especially in the room where you store food. The black spots in corners, fuzzy white growth on the ceiling and that unmistakable musty smell all say the same thing: this room has a moisture problem, and mould is just the visible symptom.
Why cold cellars grow mould
Mould needs three things: spores (always present), a food source (dust, cardboard, paint, wood shelving) and moisture. A cold cellar with condensation or active leaks provides constant moisture — so mould keeps winning no matter how many times you wipe it off.
Is cold cellar mould dangerous?
It can be. Mould releases spores that aggravate allergies and asthma, and because the cellar door opens into your basement, spores don't stay put. Mould growing on or near stored food is an obvious health concern, and heavy growth can mean you're breathing it every time you grab a jar of sauce. Sensitive individuals — kids, seniors, anyone with respiratory conditions — are affected most.
Why bleach isn't a fix
Wiping mould with bleach removes what you can see. It does nothing about the moisture that grew it, and bleach doesn't penetrate porous concrete where roots remain. That's why the spots come back in the same corners within weeks. Treating mould without fixing moisture is mowing a lawn and expecting the grass to stop growing.
The permanent approach
Cold Cellar Pro deals with the cause and the symptom in one restoration:
- Surfaces are properly prepared and treated — existing growth and contaminated coatings are removed, not painted over
- Moisture entry is sealed: crack repair plus a vapour barrier
- The room is rebuilt with polymer cement, EPS insulation, fibre mesh and an acrylic finish — surfaces that stay dry and give mould nothing to live on
A dry cold cellar simply doesn't grow mould. That's the whole strategy — and it's why our restorations hold up while wipe-downs and repaints repeat forever. Check our before-and-after results, then get your free quote. We serve all of the GTA, from Toronto to Oshawa.
