Why cold rooms get extreme condensation
Condensation needs two things: humid air and a cold surface. A cold cellar supplies both.
- Warm, moist air leaks in — from the basement through a poorly sealed door, or from outside through an open vent in summer.
- It touches cold concrete — the porch slab above and the below-grade walls stay cold year-round.
- Water appears — the air can't hold its moisture at that temperature, so it condenses on the ceiling and walls, exactly like a cold can of pop sweating outdoors in July.

What condensation does to the room
- White, chalky stains (efflorescence) as water carries minerals out of the concrete
- Peeling, bubbling paint — ordinary paint can't survive on wet concrete
- Rusted door frames, shelving and can lids
- Mould growth and the musty smell that comes with it
- Spoiled preserves and soggy packaging
What doesn't work
Painting over it traps moisture and peels within a season. Running a dehumidifier fights the symptom forever while the source keeps feeding it — and it warms the room, defeating its purpose. Blocking the vent usually makes summer condensation worse.
